What is the deal with friend codes?

ok i have heard people say forever that they are exited about online games such as MoHH2 because their are not any friend codes...does this mean you cannot play your friends, why is this a better thing...
please explain

Well I used to think friend codes sucked but now I think it rocks because sometimes you wanna play whit your friends and sometimes not,

Almost all of the games now have the option to play VS a Friend or VS anyone....8)

if its like the first heroes game then you can add friends on the lobby and they stay stored on your EA account.
