I had a $20 logitech headset and then I bought this $45 Altec Lansing headset and there was actually a huge difference in them digi, but granted I'm sure a better sound card I'd be able to hear every little footstep on the map.  I got my Altec at Best Buy, very happy with it, not to mention when I have music on they sound great also.
