How do I make a Dialog Box?

Hey, I need help with making Dialog boxes, I have never been able to get a grasp on them, can anyone give me a step by step tutorial?

What I am trying to do is make a dialog box at the very beggining of the game that will ask:
Choose a Hero:
Soldier
Knight
Archer
Mage

Exactly like that, and it will spawn a hero based on what your prefrence was.

I need it to be precise and down to the last variable, even tell me what variable types I need.
