Corruption throughout the Louisiana state government and New Orleans city government (past and present) didn't help things any. I agree that the federal relief effort was late/stalled etc., but the disorganization and incompetence of New Orleans' efforts (as a city) made a disaster into a full-blown tragedy. Why are 3/4 of their fire trucks ruined/underwater? Why did they have so many police (of high and low ranks) go AWOL? Why are so many previously hospitalized patients now dead? Why was there NO plan for evacuation prior to Katrina's bearing down on them? The answer is: No one wanted to shake things up enough to get these things done. They didn't plan for the future, and now they have no future. Next question is why the federal government is taking all the blame. They deserve some, but the past and present officials of New Orleans deserve most of the blame, as they did little to prepare their population. And when it was too late they ALL panicked. Inexcusable. They must have thought that being in charge only goes for when things run smoothly...but it matters the MOST when things go all to shit. Long post, I know. I do have a point to all this. The money (to restore order, rescue the stranded, provide food, provide medical care, restore electricity/gas, immunize the population, pay them all unemployment, drain the city, and whatever else) is going to be taken from our nation's faltering economy. Gas prices are only the beginning. Take a deeeeeeeep breath and say "recession".
