I was discussing at work with another x military person about going over as a journalist. For the right ammount of money I would probably still do it. I am sorry to hear about your neighbor dirty, I had read about that earlier, it does suck. He knew what prices he could pay being there. We dont have bin laden, afghanistan is a propped up warlord ran country, we are paying through the nose on oil, and Iraq is moving towards either civil war or an islamic state. The insurgents do not sleep in ditches and eat scraps thrown in dumpsters, there are plenty of people housing and feeding them. We are not defending the Iraqi people from extremists in syria, iran, saudi arabia, yemen, jordan, pakistan, palestine, united arab emirates, kuwait or any of the score of north african countries; we are using iraq as a shit filter battleground. Our biggest obstacle paraphrased by tony blair after the london bombings; we are fighting an idea, and ideas cannot be beaten down with force alone. We must disprove the idea in order to win. Dirtys neighbor dying has put dirty into the position of knowing someone who has died by the actions of somone from a different culture. Approximately 25,000 civillians have been killed in Iraq, with half of that number in baghdad. This has been over the past 2 years, so to put it into perspective that would be 4 WTC disasters in New York a year. But its not WTC disasters, its random violence all over the city/country. It would be us wondering if we were going to survive a shopping trip daily. Or going to work, or going to an event. At least with saddam as long as you kept your head down, you could survive to a ripe old age. I have decided to cut and paste a post I made on another forum a few months ago, it sums up my thoughts about all of this.
