Ok, here`s the story. I gave my daughter my computer and I`ve been playin on my brothers computer, this past saturday my brother and his girlfriend said they wanted to buy me a computer for my birthday. They said you can have it built or whatever you want. I don`t want to put a hole in there pocket (or maybee I should, lol) what kind of system do you guys suggest? Please be reasonable. thanx guys.

You can always get a Dell but...

As far as OEM gaming machines go, the top three in my opinion are Falcon Northwest, Voodoo, and Alienware. Of those three, Alienware will probably put the smallest hole in their pocket.

Well then, thats a nice proposition. (BEWARE Long Post)

Ok first answer some questions. Do you mainly use your computer to play Games? (I'm pretty sure you do) Then you just need a decent processor, decent drive space, decent memory, and a VERY good vid card. If you do encoding/decoding (in respect to video), then that takes lots of processing power so you would need a VERY good processor.

If its just for gaminng:
CPU: At least 2Ghz AMD or Intel (I like AMD better tho)
Motherboard: Asus, MSI, Abit brands are good (doesnt matter if you're going the Dell route tho)
RAM: 1 Gig (from Crucial, Corsair, or Kingston)
HardDrive: AT least 80 Gigs, I personally have 800 Gigs tho. I store alot high quality japanese anime.
Vid Card: Now here is the big question. The best out there now are the 256 Mb Vid cards from ATI x850 or the GeForce 6800 Ultra. (these will run you from $500-1k) But you can get a decent one like ATI x800, or ATI 9800, or the Geforce 6800, Geforce 6800 GT. Theres alot out there.

If you bulid it yourself, you'll also need a case and powersupply along with the keyboard, mouse, speakers, and monitor. I prefer to build it myself because I'll know whats in the machine and the full capabilities of it AND you save money. You could buy a nice machine from Falcon, Dell, or Alien, but it'll be pricey. I could build most systems from Alien with the same capabilities for a lesser price. But it takes more work and you don't get an overall warranty (you'll get seperate warranties for each part).

Dell tends to skimp on parts that aren't apparent to the user such as motherboards, RAM, harddrive, and CD-Rom/DVD player. So they'll use no-name brands that will just do the job, but may not be the best or highest of quality. I'm not sure about Alien or Falcon, because I haven't had the chance to look inside these machines (they cost too much). =D

So you have to weigh out what you want and whats important to you. If you buy a computer from Dell, Alien, or Falcon, you get their customer service when something breaks, or if you build it yourself, then you have to troubleshoot, replace the part yourself, or if its still under warranty, get the manufacturer to replace it.

So in summary:
If you care about whats in your computer and you want to maintain it yourself, then build it.
If you want to just have a decent machine and let the manufacture worry about replacing broken parts, then buy it. Theres lots of deals for Dell computers right now, so I would check there first. Alien and Falcon both are quite expensive but if thats what your looking for, have fun shopping!

Well said Rock.

Edit-

If you are leaning toward building your own, I'm sure that one of us can recommend specific parts and where to get them. The easiest way to determine what parts you need is for you to tell us what your budget is and what the primary purposes of the machine are. Also, if you have a donor computer you can save money by scavenging floppy drive, Cd-ROM, Monitor, KB, Mouse etc.

wow, that`s pretty informative, I use the computer for just about 100% gaming, I`ll surf the net every once in awhile to answer e-mail and punx forum but thats it, just gaming. I think I want to stay away from building it, if something breaks I don`t wanna mess with it, I do know my way around computers but i`m lazy, I just wanna buy and play, I was lookin on the alienware site, what do you think is a good one for my needs? Just gaming. They said whatever I want, but they don`t know how expensive it can get, I do, I would say around $1200.

will this include a monitor, mouse, keyboard, speakers?? or just the computer? $1200 for just the computer is enough for a very nice rig. But if it needs to include monitor and such, we'll have to see. Let us know keisor!

yeah your in like flyn for $1200 for just the box, surf the cell site for return or refurbished units, I got one that was retail $1900 ($2900 before the -30% sale thats running through 6-1-05) for $1525 to my door with a 1 year warranty.

As for Alienware, I'd get the Area-51 5500. It currently has a 500 mail in rebate, so the 1300 buck price tag is more like 800 after rebate (and free shipping!). That should make your brother and brother's gf feel better (offer ends Thursday). Its a decent machine and it gives you the 256 MB Geforce 6800 card, which is a good deal. It comes stock with 1 Gig ram, with 160 Gig harddrive space. Also an Intel 3.4 Ghz processor. 16x DVDR and a floppy drive. 1 Year warranty w/ customer service. You can extend that if you want.

Hope this helps!
