i read about this yesterday.  i really only ever knew that he was a co-founder and a recluse in england at his mothers house cuz of mental issues accelerated by the use of LSD.  i do, however, understand his perpetual influence on the band and the world of music.  i will have to check out those links after work today.

i also didn't realize "wish you were here"; "shine on you crazy diamond"; and a number of other scores were in his honor/memory, whatever you want to call it. pretty awesome.
