There are a lot of video game players in the world. These gamers have been split up into five major categories over the years; the newb, nub, noob, leet, and the normal player. The groups have existed since the beginning of games, but really have not been split up into named categories until online gaming was created. Online games have sparked a lot of competition in games and most of the terms used to describe the players are insults. Typically only the leets can classify the other players into the lower groups.
The regular players of video games are, most of the time, not online gamers. They typically tend to stick with single player games which reflect no definition of their skills in ranking games. Sometimes the regular players will partake in online gaming, but not often enough for them to become a player that can be considered anything higher than a newb. There is nothing wrong with a regular player. Most of the time a person is a regular player just because they might not have the money to spend on high speed internet to play games that are played online.
The newb, or newbie, is a player that is completely new to the game. They have just started playing the game. This category of player is not meant to be an insult, and they have no reason to be ashamed of being put in the category. These players typically will evolve into a different group over a small amount of time. This is considered the starting group, all video game players were once newbs. Depending on how a newb acts in a particular game and how well they play it, they will move into the next set of categories which are the nubs, or the noobs, or the leets.
Nubs are players that are not new to a game, but just can not seem to get any better at a game no matter how much practice they put into it. Being called a nub is considered a small insult but there is just nothing they can do about their skill level. Once a player is put into this group it is almost impossible for them to move anywhere in the game rankings. A person that is called a nub might stop playing internet games, because of extreme frustration at being called one all of the time.
Noobs, or n00bs, are the lowest ranking players of all the categories. Being called a Noob is the worst insult for online gamers. They are not new to a game and they are still somewhat unskilled. They know the basics and can play, but still manage not to do very well and do newb actions. The have played the same amount as the leets, but the skill of newbs. Losing ungracefully is another key point in being a noob. Noobs whine about being beaten in games, and come up with excuses to why they lose. Most of the time the excuses have no way of actually affecting the player, but they are used anyway. Often when the noob does okay in the game they claim to be leet players, but claiming to be leet is the most common way to tell who is a noob in a game.
Finally the leets, or 1337s, of the video game world are the best of the best. Leet is short for elite. These players are the ones that show extreme skill at a game, or they can generally just accept how they do in a game is decent. Leet players never call themselves leet, other players classify them as such. The leets are typically the only players that can classify others into groups, unless there is a general census of all players that a person is in a group. Hackers came up with the leetspeak, which is a language now used by many players to speak. They use numbers and symbols to substitute for letters. Some examples of leetspeak are 1337, and n00b. Every player above regular players can understand leetspeak to some extent.
