Platformers vs. RPG's?

Platformers Last for Months or sometimes years..
RPG Can last long too
But im no sad no more

could someone clarify what an RPG actually is? i've talked with bunches of people about it, and it seems like they all have different opinions. Isn't an RPG a game when you encounter an enemy, it changes into a battle arena, and you take turns fighting each other? Because other people i've talked to said any game in which you play the role of a character (hence the name Role Playing Game) for example, any one of the Zelda games or Mario 64, is an RPG.

RPG's are immense... i love them... especially Final Fantasy 8 and the kingdom hearts series... it's the story and getting to know the characters... however platformers are easier to pick up, and faster to play... but i love my RPG's and i hope there is a decent on on wii soon

i really like RPG's but I think that for this console that platformers will mix with it bettter but there is going to be an online nintendo rpg out soon
