Kirby was originally shown at E3 2005 as a GameCube title. The game seemed all set for a release but was pushed back on the announcement of the new ‘Revolution’ game console. It all but disappeared from release listings, and - apart from one or two details being shown here and there - Kirby’s Wii debut seemed to have been forgotten about.
There are trailers and screenshot floating around the internet. From what has been shown, we can see the tentatively titled ‘Kirby’ will be a 3d rendered side scrolling platformer in the same vein as Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards.
Alongside inhaling his enemies, is a returning ability that has not been seen since Kirby Super Star for the SNES. Kirby can summon enemies to fight alongside him (known as the Helper system), which in turn can be combined to create a Kirby ‘totem pole’ of abilities. Also seemingly shown in the trailer (although this could be speculation) is the Co-op multiplayer with 4 players coming together to defect Kirby’s adversaries.
-Have you guys put on weight since we last did this?!-
Unless developer HAL Laboratories decide to throw the Kirby series in a drastic new direction, expect to see a standard Kirby platformer. The DS Kirby games were both good (although Canvas Curse was much better received than Squeak Squad), and making use of the DS’ touch screen didn’t tamper too much with the winning formula that made Kirby popular all those years ago. Any change to the classic Kirby formula would seem unnecessary to long time fans.
It is a shame that the GameCube never saw a good Kirby game. The one game released for Gamecube, Kirby's Air Ride, was quite lacking. While it’s fair to say that most people would have rather seen a GameCube Kirby as well as a Wii Kirby, there shouldn’t be any criticism of HAL Laboratories for delaying it and wanting to put more effort into the game. It’s pretty safe to say that the screenshots shown so far lack the polish that the game will have upon release. Anyone who has played Super Smash Bros Brawl will know how good Kirby can look. Then again, how much detail can a pink blob actually have?
-About this much detail!-
Kirby is not the first GameCube game to have been ported to the Wii. Many of you have probably played Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Resident Evil 4, or even Super Paper Mario. All three of these games were very successful games that were originally planned for the GameCube but have since appeared on the Wii.
Expect to see more of Kirby at E3 where it is widely believed that it will be officially announced along with other Nintendo first party titles such as Animal Crossing. Kirby has only been confirmed for Japan and Europe. No release date has been set as of this writing.
