You type a band you like in the search field. Pandora uses the musical qualities of that band to generate a playlist for you of similar artists.

For example, I put in Talib Kweli. To start me out, they gave me 'Right About Now' by Kweli. Next up was 'Audio Visual' by J-Live. More slow, chill east coast shit. Then Zion I 'Temperature' featuring Kweli. Next was Guru with 'Power, Money & Influence'. And it goes on and on.

It's a lot like that Launch Radio shit Yahoo did a while back but with more variety and a more complex rating method. It's hot shit. DO IT.
