Guitar Hero III Question

I know that Guitar Hero III supports playing both normal and bass guitars in the game. Do you need a seperate bass guitar to play the bass sections, or can you use the guitar that you get with the game to play the bass section as well? Sorry if this has already been asked somewhere else in the forum.
