Is a Modded Wii illegal?

In the UK a modded Wii IS NOT ILLEGAL

It is LEGAL to mod your Wii, it is ILLEGAL to own copies of games you don't own and thats it.

Its your Wii, you can do what you like to it.

As badboy said, it's not illegal to mod it once it's yours. You own it, you do what you want with it. Nintendo have no control over what you do once it's yours. Say you buy a car, and want to mod your car by tinting the windows, the car manufacturer can't stop you doing that.

It's the games that you will have a problem with. Yet again, that's not nintendo's problem, more of the game makers/pubishers? - Nintendo honestly don't care what you do with your Wiis. They're still getting their money from you buying your Wiis.

I think this topic needs locking now too, the amount of people who come along and say a modded Wii is illegal when it isn't.

It is only illegal to have copies of games you do not own, modding the actual Wii itself is 100% LEGAL.
How many times do we need to say this.

Playing original imports is LEGAL on your Wii, you have to mod it to be able to do this.
Homebrew on your Wii is LEGAL, the only way to do this is to mod it.
You can watch video on the Wii after it is modded which is legal.

Homebrew is LEGAL

Homebrew means running emulators, running home made games(made by yourself or others), running videos through a homebrew video player, running Linux on a console, running abandonware games, etc.

Homebrew basically means opensource which is FREE LEGAL stuff

There is nothing ILLEGAL about homebrew as long as you don't use it to run illegal stuff like roms which you don't own the original.

Fitting a mod chip purely for allowing your console to play import games is LEGAL, remember Freeloader for gamecube, well it does the same thing other than Freeloader doesn't boot copies.
Remember the adapter for the SNES to allow you to play imported games, the same thing again.
As long as you do not use the mod chip to play illegal copies of games then you are not breaking the law

making a backup of your own game is legal and you can legally run an emulator and rom is legal as long as you own the console (due to bios being copyrighted) and the game that you own the rom of. Otherwise it is illegal
