there is a decent article on cnn right now from an international conference
on the net in Tunisia on net control. here is a quote that i liked:

"When governments talk about imposing their public policies on the Internet, unfortunately they don't typically mean, 'Let's protect human rights, individual rights, let's guarantee the freedom of the Internet,'" said Milton Mueller, a professor at Syracuse University's School of Information Studies.

"They mean, 'Damn it, somebody using the Internet did something I don't like and let's find a way to stop it,'" he said.

I personally do not trust the UN or any other "global interest" group. If we transfer control of the domain name system to a corrupt global entity, I think we will end up worse off than with our own corrupt bureaucracy. At least now the system is relatively close to representing our best interests.
