They are different, but I think the Six-Axis was made to challenge Wii's motion controls. It was clear who won, right? ;]

Motion Sensing has been around for a very long time. It is only now that it became popular. Many video games before the wii had this functionality, but somehow the wii received a lot of attention.
I believe Sony did 'steal' 'Nintendo's' idea, but it was not to be a step ahead of Nintendo, but to be a step in front of Microsoft. The wii isn't even in the same league as the PS3 or 360, its just a little dessert thats nice to have with the main meal every now and then.
