MODDING:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Magos's war3 Model editor-by Magos
"War3 Model Editor is as the name suggests a Model Viewer and a Model Editor dedicated to Warcraft 3. It supports both loading and saving of *.mdl and *.mdx model formats which are used in Warcraft 3. It also supports *.bmp,*.tga, *.png, *.jpg, *.jpeg, *.pcx and *.blp texture formats.

There is a buildt-in MPQ Browser that allows you to browse any MPQ archive, which also includes Warcraft 3 map files (*.w3m and *w3x). The MPQ Browser has been optimized for speed and is very fast to load and use. The Browser is customizable so you can add/remove your own icons and filters.

Don't expect this program to be in the same league as 3DStudio or the other leading commercial products. It was created as a simple (and free) alternative!"

War Model editor shows particles properly and has a lower tendicy to crash on corrupted or fualted models.

DirectX9 is needed and the latest patch of wc3 is highly recommended for it to work properly.

MODEL CREATION
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Milkshape v.1.7.7
Milkshape is a free trial for 30days but costs $20usa for a serial to unlock unlimited use.
Milkshape was mainly created for quake, doom and half-life model creation, yet it is possible to create warcraft mdl>mdx model from scratch.
Note: The warcraft mdx importer does not import animations, so if you want to edit a models anim then i suggest your an idiot like me.
Milkshape is able to create animation by using keyframes.
Milkshape can be found here:
http://www.swissquake.ch/chumbalum-soft/ms3d/download.html
The Warcraft mdl Exporter can be found here:

And before converting to mdx you will need this to help you.
MASSIVE CREDIT TO RDZ(RoaDaoZao for hes amaing knowlege on milkshape and mdl editing)

3d Studio max v5 could not be found
(Downloadable on ares and other p2p software)
"Comprising a set of plugins for Discreet®’s 3ds max®, these tools allow advanced users to create, modify, and quickly preview models and animations, including particle and ribbon effects, that can be used in custom maps created with Warcraft III’s World Editor. Please note that Blizzard does not directly support the Warcraft III Art Tools, and the technical support staff will not be able to respond to any related inquiries. However, detailed and illustrated instructions on how to use the software are included with the download. A valid license for Discreet®’s 3ds max® 4.0 is required in order to use the Warcraft III Art Tools. We highly recommend that 3ds max® version 4.26 is used, with the service pack 1 fixes. Windows® 2000 or XP is suggested. Note: The Warcraft III Art Tools do not include a means for creating textures. To create textures, a paint program, such as Adobe®’s Photoshop®, is required."
*V.5 is actually needed for it to work properly.*

Personally I use gmax for modeling meshes (yes, I have downloaded it before it went unfree) and Magos' editor for adding particles, fixing materials, textureanims, etc. Can't live without it :p

Werewulf, if I can add to your post. War3FileConverter isn't a must, it is so buggy tool, doesn't report where the error is etc. War3ModelEditor by Magos is much better for converting (open -> save as).
About your Oinkerwinkle animating stuff. I guess you are talking (rumours) about WARSHAPE.

yes warshape,
heh, i just copied what the tools descriptions said..sorta..ill change it.
is magos a good exporter? does it say the error location?

I tried to open one of my bugged mdls. Error was BoundRadius instead of BoundsRadius. Yobguls showed me endless list of "Unidentified token 0". Magos Model Editor showed "Error in Geoset block - BoundRadius. Unknown token" (something like that)

Wc3Viewer Question:
You find the model you're looking for and on the right part of the screen (I recommend maximizing the window) a tab will say export MDX.
